Carbon & Energy

Natta has made significant advancements in GHG emissions data collection. In 2023, we introduced new strategies and are now developing innovative projects to ensure ongoing reductions in GHG emissions.

Our goal is to become a sector leader in GHG emission reductions within the next five years.

Carbon & Energy – Emission Reduction Strategy

The following carbon reduction measures and projects have been completed or are currently being implemented.

We have invested in over 140 kW of installed solar PV at our Head Office, along with biomass heating, replacing the need for fossil gas. This initiative has significantly reduced our reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

Our plant fleet is monitored using online portals, and our excavators are equipped with Trimble GPS software to enhance efficiency.

Additionally, we have adopted the “Electric Car Salary Sacrifice Scheme.”  To date, we have rolled out 21 electric vehicles and have more on order. To further support electric vehicle usage, we have increased the number of EV chargers at our Head Office. In March 2024, we received our first fleet of five electric vans and remain committed to increasing the number of electric vehicles in our fleet.

We hold the FORS Silver accreditation and are actively working towards achieving Gold. Natta consistently invests in our plant and vehicle fleet, ensuring that all new equipment features the most efficient engines available.

We have also developed a PV/battery system that meets over 50% of our annual cabin electricity supply requirements. This system is operational at one of our sites, and we plan to expand it to our larger sites by early 2025.

Our emissions strategy will continue building on these efforts, providing a clear framework for Natta to demonstrate our carbon reduction achievements to clients over the coming years.

Carbon Calculations

We have registered with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) SME scheme to formalise our reporting. In line with the SBTi SME programme, we have adopted reduction targets of 42% in CO2 emissions by 2030, from a 2022/23 base year.

This will provide a transparent business GHG reduction target aligning with the Paris Agreement goals, (limiting global warming to 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels).

Future Sustainability Initiatives

Natta is actively expanding our commitment to renewable energy and low-carbon construction by advancing the rollout of solar, wind, and battery-powered systems for our site cabins. These sustainable energy solutions will significantly reduce reliance on conventional power sources, cutting emissions and supporting our long-term net-zero objectives.

Currently, we have two sites equipped with Solar PV Battery storage systems and wind turbines powering our site cabins, with two additional systems scheduled for installation.

Beyond renewable energy, we continue to invest in new, low-emission plant and machinery, reducing fuel consumption and carbon output. This aligns with our strategy to exceed Transport for London’s emissions standards, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment.

To further explore alternative fuels, we are currently trialling Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel at our Manydown, Basingstoke project for Urban & Civic as a sustainable alternative to diesel. This initiative forms part of our ongoing efforts to decarbonise operations and drive meaningful environmental change across our projects.
