OVERVIEW

This project involved the infrastructure works for a new three-storey steel-framed IKEA store and a four-storey multi-storey car park, and associated section 278 road works in Southampton. The tight site, bounded by an existing retail park and the busy West Quay Road serving Southampton Docks, required careful planning and coordination. Close collaboration with other contractors enabled efficient construction and ensured completion within the required programme timescales.

SCOPE OF WORKS

These included the breakup of the existing concrete hard standing and structures. The piling mat was placed using on-site crushed concrete. Pile caps were excavated, piles broken down to cut off level and pile caps constructed. There were 11 no. lift pits and 1 no. Travellator pit constructed using “Caltite Waterproof concrete”. Other concrete works included ground and upper-level power floated floors, ring beams, staircase slabs, car park spiral ramps, air-entrained brush-finished service yard bases for water storage and sprinkler tanks.

Drainage infrastructure works included the installation of both foul and surface water drainage systems, ensuring effective water management across the site. In addition, Natta delivered on-site service installations, together with the construction of the car park and associated road infrastructure, supporting access and operational requirements for the development. As part of the wider connectivity improvements, the existing Hammerson pedestrian link from the West Quay Shopping Centre was upgraded, providing a safe and accessible pedestrian connection to the new IKEA store.

Overall, this project demonstrates Natta’s capability in delivering complex retail, structural, and infrastructure works within constrained urban environments, supporting the successful delivery of a major commercial development.
