Deepcut – Green Swathe
OVERVIEW
Natta was awarded the development of a Green Swathe at the former Deepcut Barracks site by Skanska. This project formed part of a wider regeneration initiative. The project aimed to transform the previously developed brownfield site into a high-quality public open space. The scheme focused on creating an environment that is not only usable and visually appealing, but also ecologically sensitive, supporting biodiversity and long-term sustainability for both the local community and future residents.
Natta’s role was integral in delivering infrastructure and landscape works that contributed to the successful regeneration of the site, while addressing the technical and environmental challenges associated with its historic use.
SCOPE OF WORKS
The primary objective of the Green Swathe was to create a multifunctional public open space designed to serve both existing residents and future occupiers of the development. The scope of works included the construction of pedestrian pathways, the installation of footbridges, the development of open watercourses, and extensive soft landscaping works. Together, these elements were carefully integrated to enhance the visual character of the area, encourage public use, and improve local biodiversity.
Before the main construction works could commence, Natta undertook a comprehensive land remediation programme. Due to historic contamination associated with previous site use, a strict remediation strategy was required to ensure environmental safety and regulatory compliance.
A further technical challenge was the presence of shallow high-voltage electrical cables running through the site. These assets required careful identification and protection throughout the construction phase, as well as long-term safeguarding measures to ensure their integrity following project completion.
Access to the site was restricted due to its location adjacent to an active housing development. This detailed logistical planning ensured the project progressed smoothly without causing undue disruption to the surrounding community. Natta’s established local presence and knowledge of the area played a vital role in overcoming this challenge. We successfully coordinated the delivery of imported soils and other materials, ensuring minimal impact on nearby residents and demonstrating our commitment to environmental practices. Overall, this project highlights Natta’s ability to deliver complex environmental and regeneration schemes, combining technical expertise, careful planning, and sustainable construction practices to create this lasting Green Swathe.
